After months of denial, Pakistan is officially acknowledging "a part of the conspiracy" of the Mumbai terrorist attacks was hatched in its territory. On the same day that U.S. envoy Richard Holbrooke concluded a four-day visit to Pakistan, the nation announced that it had initiated trial proceedings against eight suspects and arrested most of those involved in the Mumbai massacre. The announcement, tentatively welcomed in India, will be greeted with relief in Washington.
Is there a catch? Yet this doesn’t mean Pakistan will surrender to India’s demands. A senior Pakistani diplomat on Thursday already demanded India hand over Ajmal Amir Kasab, the only terrorist captured alive for the attacks. Pakistan also wants India to resume the composite dialogue process. Indian analysts though say ties between the two countries will take a long time repairing.
